Kontek Industries Provides Homeland Security/Force Protection for the U.S. Air Force
State-of-the-art Massive Modular Blocks Program Protects USAF Air Combat Command Long Range Bomber Bases
New Madrid, Mo., February 2, 2003 — Kontek Industries announced today that it had successfully provided over 1,500 modular blast barriers to the U.S. Air Force's Air Force Electronic Systems Center's Force Protection Command and Control Program Office. The blast barriers were installed to protect critical weapons bunker doors at Air Combat Command Long Range Bomber Bases. These barriers were designed to defeat massive blasts and shoulder fired linear threats.
Kontek Industries' outstanding performance was recognized by Lt. Colonel Donald E. Wussler, Jr., Director, Air Force Protection C2 Systems, who stated, "Kontek delivered a high quality product on schedule to multiple geographically scattered locations. This was particularly impressive considering the number of items delivered, the many contract modifications made during the period of performance, and the stringent specification requirements."
"We believe that our unmatched technological capabilities in this critical area of homeland security and force protection play a vital role in the defense of our homeland. Kontek Industries is proud to be a part our nation's war on terrorism," said Kontek Chairman and CEO Charlie Merrill.

The company has successfully full-scale tested DOS K4 and K8 crash barriers. K4 (15,000 lb vehicle at 30 mph). K8 (15,000 lb vehicle at 40 mph, actual recorded impact 44.6 mph). Our design engineers, consultants, and UMR experts used this actual live crash data to increase barrier size to defeat a vehicle weighing 5,000 lbs more at 6 mph faster speed resulting in a confirmed barrier design at 20,000 lb vehicle at 50 mph.
- Barriers have internal barrier-to-barrier connection.
- All Kontek barriers are stand alone. No foundation required.
- No construction required.
- Barriers have cast in chase slot on back to run conduit for electric, video cables, alarm wire, etc.
- Barrier design allows for mounting poles on barriers for cameras, lights, etc.
- Modular stand-alone design allows barriers to be moved in the event emergency vehicles need additional access.
- Modular stand-alone design allows for various placement configurations, and fast, simple and economic add-on protection should the threat level increase in the future. Various surface architectural finishes such as brick, inset panel frame, exposed aggregate, and painted surface are available as an option on all concrete passive barriers.
